rehearsals
April 11th, 2003 | by john |Ever been in a play? or been part of a concert? You are given a single role amongst everyone else who are part of this wonderful play or concert. We all have our solos or soliloquies at our own times so each one of us practices our own part along with the ensembles… but our focus is really our own part, the part where you will be the only one playing or acting and everyone’s eyes will be focused on yours. You don’t really care what everyone thinks… just that one that matters to you sitting out there and watching you.
So you practice your part over and over again – because to you, that is the toughest part – that’s the only obstacle. Alone, when no one is watching, you practice with all your heart and emotions. You play or act parts over and over trying to make sure everything is perfect. You finally perfect it and become confident but then you know in the back of your mind that there are always things that go wrong when we least expect them to. This clouds your mind.
The day of the performance comes, you’re all dressed – ready to do your job. You do everything perfectly when the focus of the audience isn’t directly on you. The minutes tick by and now you’re counting the seconds – here it comes!
And you freeze.
You forget what you have been practicing and can do without even looking at the music or thinking about your lines. Your brain starts analyzing the situation. You are mesmerized by the audience. You are captivated and you have no where to go. You are given looks that you can’t comprehend at all. You wonder, what could they possible be thinking?
My sentiments, exactly.

absolutely. part of the reason I never did any theater stuff in high school was stage fright. I finally got over it my high school year, but I kinda feel like I cheated myself out of some wonderful experiences because of my own deficiencies.
