The Da Vinci Code controversy.

Friday, May 12th, 2006

People are calling The Da Vinci Code a controversy. Why? It is a work of fiction. It is a thriller. As infamous as I am for making up random (and yet sometimes stupid) similes, this ‘controversy’ is like human existence getting angry at machines after watching The Matrix. How ridiculous does it sound to ask for a disclaimer in the beginning of The Matrix? If it did, what is it going to say?

Disclaimer: This film is a work of fiction. Please do not believe that machines are farming human beings for the sole purpose of using our bodies as an energy source. When you get home, please do not destroy or be afraid of your personal computers. Thank you for reading this disclaimer requested by the machines.

How was that for a half-hearted chuckle?

Although I am neither an evangelist or even a frequent church-goer, I believe and have faith in God. This book has not affected my faith. This movie will not affect my faith. The church asks the people for faith; it should learn to have faith in the people.

Did I call it or what?

Again, I don’t watch American Idol. However, I can read the frontpage headlines although I can’t believe they are frontpage headlines of just about every general news media outlet. Every single season you have ‘Shocking American Idol booted!’ near the end of the season. Aside from ‘angry American Idol fans that will watch the next season no matter how angry they are’ – what else did FOX get? Free publicity. Free attention.

American Idol: American Injustice – Have The Voters Gone Mad?

Some callers claim ‘Idol’ votes were misdirected

An excerpt from my post entitled Current events on April 21st:

I hate American Idol. I thought it was dumb the first season, I still think it is absolutely dumb. I don’t understand how so many Americans seem addicted to this glamour-ized version of whatever it was at the Apollo show decades ago. It’s a reality show that is governed by television gimmicks like any other show on 24 hours a day. What? The show gets viewers involved? How do you know? You ever seen a 1994 movie called Quiz Show? It was about a very popular quiz show with contestants that were picked to win prior to the show being taped. Now, I’m not saying American Idol is fixed (although it would be awesome if it was and it causes the downfall of American Idol). In the end though, all those votes that the American public sends in – they are not ever accounted for in their production of the show. There is always news once every season of American Idol where media reports “Favorite American Idol gets booted” – no viewer stops to question how they got booted and why they were labeled as favorites in the first place. People made mistakes grading the SATs. People made mistakes keeping track of Presidential election votes. And at the end of the day, 31 million Americans trust a TV show to keep a record of ~31 million (more or less) votes.

Those AI fans that didn’t know this was coming is in denial of how dumb American Idol really is and need to move on so that maybe FOX will take some time to make quality television shows for all those hours wasted on people singing on television.

Fell into the VoIP Hole.

Friday, May 5th, 2006

I am not a big fan of ‘latest consumer technology.’  I am the kind of person that watches for reviews and users’ reactions of new consumer technology before even considering purchasing it.  However, I fell into the VoIP hole two weeks ago.  The deal was unbeatable, purchased a $199 for two year deal minus a $70 coupon I had, the total came up to about $140 for two years.  That is $70 per year for unlimited long distance within the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.  Certainly better than paying ~$20 per month for local calls only.

I’m gonna give it a test for about a week before I decide whether the quality of VoIP warrants the change.  One of the things I am looking into is how the bandwidth cap of my broadband internet connection will effect the QoS of VoIP.  If it is that big of a problem, I will need to consider purchasing one of the Linksys wireless routers to replace my D-Link wireless router since there are custom firmwares out there that will allow me to configure a specific QoS.

The quality was surprisingly ‘normal.’  I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference if someone else had installed it for me secretly.
