Fell into the VoIP Hole.
May 5th, 2006 | by john |I am not a big fan of ‘latest consumer technology.’ I am the kind of person that watches for reviews and users’ reactions of new consumer technology before even considering purchasing it. However, I fell into the VoIP hole two weeks ago. The deal was unbeatable, purchased a $199 for two year deal minus a $70 coupon I had, the total came up to about $140 for two years. That is $70 per year for unlimited long distance within the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Certainly better than paying ~$20 per month for local calls only.
I’m gonna give it a test for about a week before I decide whether the quality of VoIP warrants the change. One of the things I am looking into is how the bandwidth cap of my broadband internet connection will effect the QoS of VoIP. If it is that big of a problem, I will need to consider purchasing one of the Linksys wireless routers to replace my D-Link wireless router since there are custom firmwares out there that will allow me to configure a specific QoS.
The quality was surprisingly ‘normal.’ I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference if someone else had installed it for me secretly.
